"Sculpting Extreme Makeover" is my own contemplation about plastic surgey, face-lift and our obsession with beauty. This is an extreme makeover where an ugly girl is changin into a beautiful one. But sometimes it is hard to say when to stop and the beautiful face becomes an ugly and grotesque mask. For this piece, I tried to capture a look somewhere between all the expressions Matt can make with his very animated face. The result is a sculpture that sometimes looks like he's about to smile, sometimes smirking, sometimes irritated. The idea was to have the expression go with whatever was being said on the show. I like the piece- this is classical portraiture and the expression changes with the lighting. THE MATERIAL: I sculpt exclusively in Cx5, a material I invented and have available at store.adambeaneindustries.com Cx5 handles like fine clay when warm and is hard as plastic when cool. My two favorite properties of the material are: First, it needs NO armature! (regardless of the size of the piece- it is totally self-supporting), and second, when it's cool, you can be as rough as you like with it without worrying about mushing up your details. In fact, I scrub my sculptures vigorously with dish soap and a toothbrush to keep them clean throughout the sculpting process- something you absolutely cannot do with ordinary clay. It is liberating to be able to hold a sculpture in your hand as it takes form instead of having it be stuck on an armature. Cx5 can be reused indefinitely and is completely non-toxic. It takes long-long time and finger blisters to mix Kato because it is really firm clay . I add liquid Kato to make it soft and easier to sculpt. I do prepare my mix ahead for many dolls to make. -my fav sculpting tools are dental tools; -I am smoothing polymer clay with flat brash dipped in liquid polymer clay and clay softener; -No I do not use or make no molds! -armature is 16G and 20G wire, paper or polymer clay coated; -Viscose, Silk or Mohair for hair; -film, fusible film or silk for wings; -use Google or any other search engine to found this staff -this is not an instructional video. Thinking about it gave me idea of my new sculpture called "Something Missing". I was wondering how lack of love would affect our life. I am thinking about the genuine love and compassion toward another human being. I started by creating bust of a girl but the place where her heart was supposed to be became hallow, empty space, just echo of the real heart. Without that vital part she became like a coldblooded reptile. Her skin is covered with scales. On back of her head she has bumps and depressions. They create the shape of a crooked spine. It is symbolic of her lack of character. She is becoming fragmented and seemingly, useless. Her body is disintegrating, cracking and falling apart. Her slightly open lips want to say something but they are paralyzed by a need to say something negative. So she will say nothing at all. Without our hearts continually being fulfilled with warm emotions we will not be any different from snakes and lizards. Life would be existence. Using clay tubes to get large forms, I then use the TrimSmoothBorder brush with square alpha to define the rock texture. Adding and subtracting with specific brushstrokes to grip onto the uneven clay tubes surface, I can produce organic chaotic rock shapes quite quickly.
