euronews le mag - Ayyam Gallery, London challenges perceptions of Arabic art Video Clips. Duration : 2.43 Mins.
www.euronews.com The first exhibition to grace the newly opened Ayyam Gallery in London is "Shooting the Cloud" by acclaimed Lebanese artist Nadim Karam. The show comprises a series of new paintings, rich in colour and presenting a playful, almost satirical, perception of love and war. Karam's multi-disciplinary approach incorporates painting, drawing, sculpture and writing. Fusing various cultural influences, Karam's works transcend social, political and national borders. The artists says: "I grew up in Lebanon. I experienced war then, I'm experiencing it even now; it's all around us in the region. "Through the work I'm doing here, you can feel in the paintings the absurdity of war and there is this continuity of optimism that we should give to all people around us. "It shows also in the glitter that I have used and the fresh colours, to take us beyond what is presented there and to find joy and life." Founded in Damascus in 2006, the Ayyam Gallery sought to nurture Syria's dynamic contemporary art scene. The decision to open in London reflects the Gallery's mission to challenge the popular perception of Middle Eastern art and aims at an aesthetic with global resonance. The gallery was co-founded by Khaled Samawi, he says: "(The)art and culture coming out of the Middle East is a very good story and that's why people are interested in it because the Middle East is a great place and what's happening there right now, well it's violence I think will lead hopefully to a ...

euronews le mag - Degas and the nude Tube. Duration : 1.83 Mins.
www.euronews.com Degas and the Nude is a new exhibition at the Musee D'Orsay in Paris. The works on display span half a century although they are perhaps less well known than his paintings of ballet dancers and horses. This exhibition explores Degas's evolution as an artist throughout his long career. Exhibition curator Xavier Rey said: "The nude plays a central role in Degas' oeuvre because it's where he started his career, it was at the heart of the classical art training he received. And the nude can be seen throughout Degas' career as the genre through which he innovates technically, using painting, drawing, sculpture, monotype, engraving and obviously pastels, but it's also the genre through which he evolves stylistically." Some of the works are very seldom on show due to their fragility. Others have been borrowed from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Chicago Art Institute and the New York Metropolitan Museum. The exhibition runs until July. For more information see "www.musee-orsay.fr" Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

euronews cinema - Ki-Duk's 'Pieta' gets US release for Oscars Video Clips. Duration : 2.07 Mins.
www.euronews.com The near-death of an actress on set nearly ended director Kim Ki-Duk's career four years ago, but after making 'Pieta', which took best picture at this year's Venice Film Festival, the maker of 2003's sublime 'Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter... and Spring' is now South Korea's most feted auteur. Kim's gritty, artistic movies have shocked and carried deep social messages since the self-taught, working-class director debuted with his low-budget movie 'Crocodile' in 1996. He has remained an outsider and something of a fringe figure on the Korean arts scene, describing himself as a monster, thriving on his inferiority complex. "It is an element that makes me train myself harder and grow bigger. The word 'monster' sounds as if it's something enormous, unidentifiable and predatory. Monster means monster, but I don't think it's that bad," he half-joked. The movie, which Kim said he made as a comment on capitalism in Korea, scooped the Golden Lion award at Venice, where one critic termed it "intense". It was his 18th film, and the first one from South Korea to win a major award. It is also South Korea's entry for Best Foreign Language Film for the 2013 Academy Awards. 'Pieta', (named after the famous sculpture by Michelangelo), depicts the relationship between a heartless loan shark and a middle-aged woman who claims she is his mother. Although critics say it is less brutal than many of Kim's other films it still features mutilation, sexual violence and ...
